Researchers in the US have found that prescription medication containing an ingredient that was also prescribed for erectile dysfunction is also more effective for helping to heal the infection, according to the study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The study was funded by Pfizer, which makes Viagra, a drug used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
“We found that the combination of sildenafil and tadalafil is also effective in helping the patient to heal from the infection,” lead researcher Dr. Eric Krasovsky, a urologist at the University of California, San Diego Hospital, told the journal.
“These results are exciting, because this combination has been used by men for years, but the fact that it’s so effective and has so many potential uses makes it a very popular treatment for sexual dysfunction.”
The drug sildenafil belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. It’s approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
“This was not the first time sildenafil was discovered,” Krasovsky told the journal. “However, it was the first time a drug was found that could heal a sexually transmitted infection.”
A previous study showed that sildenafil could help men to get and keep an erection when they have sex.
“This was the first time sildenafil had been shown to prevent an infection,” Krasovsky said.
In the study, researchers randomly assigned 18 to one of four groups: group 1, a group that took sildenafil, and group 2, a group that took sildenafil and a placebo. They measured the severity of the infection before and after treatment.
In groups 1 and 2, the infection was treated for up to a year, while in group 3, it was treated for five years. The sildenafil and the placebo groups were then compared to the group that received a placebo.
The researchers found that sildenafil was more effective in helping patients heal from the infection.
